Black Warrior Riverkeeper's mission is to protect and restore the Black Warrior River and its tributaries. We are a citizen-based nonprofit organization dedicated to improving water quality, habitat, recreation, and public health throughout our patrol area, the Black Warrior River watershed. This vital river basin is home to over a million people and is entirely contained within Alabama, America's leading state for freshwater biodiversity. Throughout the watershed, our staff identifies major pollution problems and works on cleaning them up while increasing public awareness. Birmingham residents David Whiteside and Roger Conville founded Black Warrior Riverkeeper in 2001. Black Warrior Riverkeeper became an incorporated business in the City of Birmingham, a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit organization, and a proud member of Waterkeeper Alliance. The citizen-based membership organization was founded to protect the Black Warrior River watershed from numerous pollution problems. Although the Black Warrior River watershed is healthier overall than it was decades ago, it remains vulnerable in many areas due to ongoing pollution and the tendency of Alabama's government agencies to neglect environmental protection. With no other advocacy organization solely focused on the entire Black Warrior River basin, Black Warrior Riverkeeper has been a unique and invaluable defender of the watershed. The organization was named Alabama’s 2006 Watershed Organization of the Year by Alabama Rivers Alliance, 2007 Conservation Organization of the Year by Alabama Environmental Council, and 2008 Green Paddle Award winner by the American Canoe Association.
