Mary Allen Murray ~ Engagement Coordinator
Mary Allen Murray became Black Warrior Riverkeeper’s Volunteer Coordinator on November 1, 2023 as a part-time independent contractor. In 2026, she begins a full-time staff position as Engagement Coordinator. Mary Allen leads our Litter Cleanups Program, expands Black Warrior Riverkeeper’s volunteer engagement, and represents us in a variety of outreach opportunities across the Black Warrior River watershed.
Mary Allen is a recent graduate of Vanderbilt University where she studied Earth & Environmental Sciences and Piano Performance. Her studies equipped her with a scientific background and fieldwork experience, while also giving her opportunities to involve herself in community outreach.
As a Birmingham native, Mary Allen has developed a profound appreciation for the Black Warrior River watershed. She grew up swimming at Smith Lake, in the Black Warrior River’s Sipsey Fork watershed, which fostered her love of Alabama’s natural beauty. Her personal connection to the watershed motivates her to protect and preserve it for future generations.
Mary Allen is excited to share her passion for conservation and serve her community during her time at Black Warrior Riverkeeper. She encourages folks from all age groups, backgrounds, and locations to sign up for our monthly volunteer newsletter email: blackwarriorriver.org/volunteer-newsletters/.
