Thank You 2024 Volunteers

Dear Black Warrior Riverkeeper supporters,

I am pleased to report that 805 volunteers donated 3,431 service hours through Black Warrior Riverkeeper in 2024! According to The Independent Sector, the most recent estimated national dollar value of volunteer time is $33.49 per hour. Multiplied by $33.49, our volunteers’ 3,431 hours in 2024 represented a contribution of $114,904.19 to the community! Thank you, volunteers!

A great deal of credit for this inspiring output is due to our outreach coordinator, Katie Holmes, and volunteer coordinator, Mary Allen Murray, for running our volunteer litter cleanups program. Our 40 cleanups in 2024 removed 26,553 pounds of litter from the 17-county Black Warrior River watershed!

Beyond cleanups, volunteers supervised by our staff scientist, John Kinney, reviewed 455 facilities’ Discharge Monitoring Reports to record the number and nature of pollution violations that a wide variety of facilities had throughout your vital watershed. These volunteer researchers are on the front lines of our increasingly successful efforts to improve public health, wildlife habitat, and outdoor recreation for all.
