Dr. Mercy Aula

Dr. Mercy Aula is an Assistant Professor of Environmental Health Sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Originally from Nigeria, where various environmental and public health challenges persist, her passion for public and environmental health deepened, motivating her to advance her studies in the field. She holds an undergraduate degree in Biochemistry, a master’s in Environmental Safety and Health Management, and a Ph.D. in Environmental Health Sciences.

Dr. Aula teaches a range of courses covering topics such as water quality, air quality, and climate change. Her past research primarily focused on occupational health assessment; however, her interests also extend to environmental exposure assessment and environmental justice. Before pursuing her doctorate, she worked in the Environmental Division at the Metro Public Health Department in Nashville, Tennessee.

In addition to her teaching role at UAB, Dr. Aula mentors and advises students and serves on several committees at both the university and within the broader Alabama community. She also serves on the boards of The Doc Savealife Foundation and the Pathway of Promise Foundation. These organizations provide free medical and surgical care in remote areas of Nigeria, and offer scholarships, mentorship, and spiritual empowerment to underprivileged children in the country, respectively.

Outside of her professional commitments, Dr. Aula enjoys traveling and spending time with her family.
