MySpace.com, a social networking site that has become the world’s most visited website, recently nominated Black Warrior Riverkeeper for an Environmental Impact Award. The award’s winner, Surfrider Foundation, generously decided to split its $10,000 prize with us and the other finalist, “Grease Not Gas.” Thank you, Surfrider and MySpace! We were among the first nonprofits to utilize MySpace for outreach, and we have since taught other groups such as Waterkeeper Alliance and Friends of Red Mountain Park how to use it. MySpace provides a dynamic yet cost-free platform from which we circulate educational blogs, pollution updates, action alerts, event invitations, volunteer opportunities and more to our 11,000 MySpace friends. Being nominated for a Impact Award was an amazing honor and enhanced our visibility on MySpace, connecting us with many new allies.
